IRS Phone Scams

Updated: Sep 22, 2022

What you need to know about the IRS

Many of you have recently received telephone calls or emails from someone supposedly from the IRS or the Department of the Treasury. We at Fair, Anderson and Langerman want you to know that these telephone calls and emails are scams. Here is what you need to know about the IRS:

  1. The IRS or Department of Treasury will not contact you initially by telephone or email. They will send any official correspondence through the mail.

  2. The IRS never asks for credit card, debit card or prepaid card information over the telephone.

  3. The IRS never insists that taxpayers use a specific payment method to pay tax obligations.

The IRS never requests immediate payment over the telephone and will not take enforcement action immediately following a phone conversation. Taxpayers usually receive prior notification of IRS enforcement action involving IRS tax liens or levies.

If you receive such a telephone call, hang up and contact the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration or the IRS at 1-800-366-4484. If you receive an email, forward the email to phishing@irs.gov. Click here to learn more about the IRS warning about phone scams.
